I. A kiss for luck and we’re on our way
The meadow was always so beautiful this time of the year; the sun shone bright and warm on the grass, melting the last bits of frost into odorous view, while the mares of the herd just started bringing their foals in the open, letting them explore after the long, cold winter spent cooped up inside. Many of them were so young Genji was pretty sure it was their first time outside.
He and Jesse were supposed to check that everything was in order at the border, but Genji kept getting distracted by the kids playing among the trees and the hedges. He couldn’t help but smile as he looked on, observing as the young foals found out how cold the stream was when they dipped their thin legs in it, how fun it was to splash in the fresh mud, even as their mothers sighed at the thought of having to brush all that mess out of their soft coats, fond and exasperated in equal measure.
“Penny for your thoughts?” Jesse murmured, slowing his pace to flank him, one arm winding easy and warm around his waist.
Shaking his head, Genji shrugged. There was an idea growing in his mind, but he feared putting it into words yet. He just kept watching as the mares started calling their children as the time to go neared; he watched as the foals grumbled amongst themselves, reluctantly saying goodbye to their new friends, trotting to their mother’s sides. He watched as they were fussed over by their moms, love and worry in every gesture, and ached.
“Did you ever think about having a family?” he blurted out.
Jesse’s eyes widened, his arm tightening around him. “Like, you mean—kids? Do you want kids?”
“I guess,” Genji answered, swallowing. He was carefully not picturing pintaloosa-patterned foals with dark hair and sharp smiles. “Ah, forget it. I guess it’s the heat season talking—”
Jesse shushed him, leaned forward for a kiss, and Genji let out a breath he didn’t know he was holding.
II. We'll start out walking and learn to run
“This is fucking stupid,” Hanzo blurted, barging in without knocking or signaling his arrival in any way, as usual.
“What is stupid, Hanzo?” Genji croaked, groggy and rough. A new wave of nausea threatened to turn his stomach, but he managed to stave it off. Pregnancy was fun.
Jesse looked up from where he was running a brush through Genji’s coat and glared at Hanzo, who only then seemed to take in the quite intimate scene he’d walked in on and immediately started backing up, very slowly.
“I’m sorry,” he babbled. “I’ll just go.”
“It’s fine,” Genji reassured him, patting Jesse’s arm to encourage him to keep working and stop looking like a stallion ready to tear apart anyone who disturbed his pregnant mate.
Hanzo hesitated.
“Why don’t you tell me what’s going on?” Genji continued, soothingly. He already had an inkling, actually; Hanzo looked panicked and embarrassed in a very specific and familiar way, one that Genji hadn’t seen in a long time. He couldn’t keep the teasing out of his voice as he insisted, “Is this about a girl, dear brother?”
The blush on Hanzo’s face spoke a thousand words.
Genji chuckled. “Wanna me to braid your hair while you tell me about it?”
“Don’t be silly, we’re not foals anymore,” Hanzo muttered, but he still came to lie next to him. Jesse eyed him but said nothing. “It’s stupid, anyway. She came from outside—who the hell makes that kind of trip while on the verge of heat?”
“Someone with balls, no doubt.” Genji hummed, smiling at the quiet admiration in Hanzo’s voice. His brother fell hard and fast. “What’s the name of this hot-blooded mare?”
“Ashe.”
Jesse’s brushing motions stilled.
Genji tilted his head. “What is it, Jesse? Do you know her?”
The centaur cleared his voice and resumed brushing. “Well. You can say that. She’s from my herd.”
Hanzo’s face twitched through a complicated series of grimaces. Genji just laughed at him.
3. So much of life ahead
“You sure you don’t rather do this tomorrow?” Jesse murmured, kissing Genji’s brow and rubbing his shoulders. “You look tired, sweetpea. We ain’t in no rush.”
Genji smiled and let Jesse fuss over him; he felt his heart melt under the attention. He would’ve loved to blame the hormones, but he knew that it was all him; he was such a sap, sometimes.
“I’ll be fine. I don’t want to wait to be really tired.”
“What if he starts asking too many questions—”
“—I’ll field them,” Genji cut him off. “He’s curious, that’s just—”
Before he could say anything else, they heard the tell-tale click-clack of overexcited little hooves stomping on hardwood.
“Papa! Daddy! ” Hikaru shrieked, dropping his school stuff in a messy pile next to the door, and nearly skidding across the floor.
“Shhh, why do you always have to make such a ruckus, little terror,” Jesse complained jokingly, catching the rowdy foal by the shoulders and giving him a noogie.
Genji would never get over how similar they looked; Hikari had gotten his light grey coat, but the light brown hair and the warm sun-kissed skin were all Jesse’s, and it was all the more evident when they stood so close to each other.
“Stop that, daddy, it smarts!” Hikari laughed.
“Welcome back,” Genji smiled, stepping closer to ruffle his hair. “What happened to make you so noisy?”
Hikari’s eyes went bright. “I think we’re going on a field trip next summer! Teacher says that if we’re extra good we might go up to the Outside River and see the bridge!”
“That’s very exciting, honey. Did you know that your daddy came through that very bridge just to meet me?”
“Yes, papa, you’re always telling that story.”
Hikari rolled his eyes as he said it, but Genji knew Hikari liked hearing about it. He suspected that while he acted all aloof, their son was as much a romantic at heart as he was.
“Speaking of which… your papa needs to tell you something,” Jesse said, gruffly.
Genji smiled at the foal’s curious expression. “How would you like a sibling in the spring?”
